Jacquemus is a French fashion brand which achieved an identity for its attractive silhouette, stunning accessories, modern and minimalistic designs which incorporate the brand’s South France tradition. Looking deeper on each of their collection, it reveals a composition between clean lines, neutral palettes, asymmetrical draping with exclusive cuts and oversized hats which have become a symbol to the brand.  


For the Spring/Summer 2018 collection called ‘’La Bomba’’ the designer, Simon Porte Jacquemus mention on paper magazine his ideas which is ‘’ was really about the feeling of being at the beach all day and then coming back to this party at night’’. In the collection visualise a juxtaposition of a serene beach atmosphere. Emphasising relaxing place surrounds by the waves and the breezes, whilst express the vibrant and festive atmosphere of a social party being held at the beach. Therefore, it is shows that Jacquemus wants to blend the two dynamic situations together and melting together it tends to unite the overall atmosphere. 







Furthermore, each product from the collection has its own statement on how appreciate a day at the beach. For instance, the sensual designs emphasise the sensuality of the female body by off the shoulder styles, asymmetrical details and various silhouettes. The extravagant hat, capture the elegance and the charm of the French countryside which can be symbolise the brand’s roots which gives a touch of Mediterranean lifestyle. Therefore, it becomes an image of the collection emphasising a deep sense of sophistication. 





One of their noted accessories is Le Chiquito bag, frequently notice by celebrities in various occasions. Regardless of its ultra-small dimension’s bag, it has different silhouettes: Le Chiquito Noeud, Le Grand Chiquito, Le Chiquito Long and Le Chiquito Moyen. As I mention before the Le Chiquito bag is a unique design and easily to find. It has massive impact inside the fashion industry as being an innovative collection which start the tiny bag trend. 

In conclusion, the brand adopts a storytelling through clothing and accessories with the significance of South France’s heritage whilst, attracting various consumers which enjoying its blending of minimalist aesthetics.

Japanese fashion is influenced by rich cultural heritage and historical depth with various forms and colours. Inside the Japanese culture is appreciate the modesty and simplicity which reflects the elegance and fresh silhouettes. This designs, highlight the connection to nature which is clear from clothing designs. Which merge natural materials and motifs to inspired by the natural world.  


In Japanese culture, there is a term called ‘Wabi-sabi,’ which emphasise an intellectual philosophy. ‘Wabi’ indicate a discovery of the beauty in simplicity, spiritual and serenity; while ‘sabi’ is the passage of time, represent everything that grow and how aging. In conclusion, when you combine the two term it emphasises the imperfection, transience, and authenticity. Inside the fashion industry, the aesthetics of the ‘wabi-sabi’ are simplicity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of natural and objects of nature.  




Yohji Yamamoto is legendary Japanese fashion designer who knows for his manly tailoring and monochrome colour palette. An article on highsnobiety  wrote by Alec Banks, which investigate into Yamamoto’s perspective view on using monochrome colour palette, citing Yamamoto’s belief that the colour black can provocate a sense of confrontation and submission. Therefore, on his monochromatic designs tell a story of a child who were compelled to see its mother as a father too.  


In the same article, Yamamoto mention his prospective view: ‘’black is lazy and easy but mysterious’’. In my angle of view, the colour black potentially initiate see flat but with deeper looking it can reveal its thoughtful ability to stimulate emotions. Its speaks and narrate about sentiments such as anger, strength, melancholy, vulnerability, serenity and the ambiguous nature of distinctive persona. In conclusion the colour black, go beyond of its superficial aspects which convey various emotions that express the human experience.

American fashion is still figuring out a way through the concept of diversity and how wants to be recognised on the world stage. It has a global impact and reputation of bringing jeans, workwear, sportswear, streetwear into the fashion world. Therefore, when the question is posed, “What defines American Fashion?”, the reaction can be broadly such as might not be able to express it specifically while others can show it.  


In WWD Mike Eckhaus, Eckhaus Latta mentions: “When you think about the French or Italians or the British, there’s confidence. Like, ‘This is what Milan or London or Paris looks like and we’re confident in this.’ And for some reason New York is always like, ‘Uh I don’t know. Maybe we’re too commercial and it’s b boring.’ Yes, that is true for a lot of work that is presented in New York.” I would like to agree with Mike Eckhaus, because New York highlights on the fashion commercial and the business features. Due to the balancing creativity with commercial, it is contributing to see a lack of audacity compared to alternatives fashion cities. Although, if you look on the historical circumstances Paris, Milan, and London from century they prove their own fashion identities. 















For example, Micheal Kors is an American fashion designer which is known for his clothing and accessories. His work emphasises a casual grace by melting the classic American sportwear with a touch of sophisticate aesthetic. In my prospective view, the brand, Micheal Kors relates to commercial strategy which target an overseas of consumer base.  Therefore, I personally think from his designs does not capture the essence of American fashion, but he goes towards to a traditional and classic fashion aesthetics.


By this it shows that Micheal Kors designs does not represent an evolving nature of American Fashion. In conclusion, American fashion identity appears to be a new develop with a delicate interaction of commerce and creativity. However, is still in a place where can define its own identity especially, to highlights that has promising events which can be create its own identity inside the world of fashion.
